Transcript: Go ON Gold video, Simon Stevens. Simon Stevens, Disability Consultant, Trainer and Activist, talks to Go ON Gold from his home office using a “Lightwriter” text to speech aid, surrounded by his press cuttings and many national awards. “I believe that the internet and other technology has been fundamental for the liberation of many disabled people, especially those with significant impairments. “I believe I would not be able to do a fraction of what I am able to do now without the internet. Second Life has enabled me to meet people from all over the world, interact with them, and make a difference to people in places I have never heard of through my virtual disability-themed nightclub called Wheelies which has been amazing. “Cost is always a factor, and finding someone to repair my machine when it breaks down on a Sunday morning. I have been brought up with a computer as my main way of making a contribution as the difficulties are less than using pen and paper. I am proactive as I will contact the makers of hardware and software to suggest ways it can be improved as it is often the biggest things that can make the biggest difference. “I always believe things will always improve and a feature I dream about will be just a matter of time. “I believe the next big thing will be the wireless integration of anything and everything electronic like washing machines and microwaves with personal computers, tablets and mobiles so we can control our homes like never before which will benefit many disabled people, and indeed everyone.” --- Go ON Gold is a campaign to help disabled people get online and access digital technologies that are essential to modern life.
